Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. Matthew 10:29
Recently this verse became more real to me than ever before. In the following lines, Jesus goes on to say, "But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows."
The passage as a whole had always been a sweet thought - an expression of God's sovereignty, devotion and care for us. But it was just something I knew, and maybe not something I deep-down believed.
Until this weekend, while I was walking down the sidewalk in the shade of a local grocery store & talking to my mom on the phone. I stumbled upon a black and white splotch on the ground barely noticing quick enough to sidestep it. Looking down at it from above, I squinted and crouched struggling to make sense of what it was. To my surprise, I found a teeny little bird upside down with its white belly in the air.
I stammered to explain what I was witnessing to my mom, when suddenly the bird flipped over. Now I could tell it was a hummingbird barely two inches long. Its deep green and purple feathers rose rapidly with each breath. I was sure it would die. I felt hopeless with no idea of how to help nurse it along.
Before I could manage to scrape together a rescue mission, the bird shot into the sky up and fluttering like it had never touched the ground. I was amazed and confused.
By the time I got home, this verse had me in a fit of worship. It fell into my mind as though it had learned something from the bird - suddenly and with it a whisper from Jesus himself telling me that I am seen, cared for and valued even more than the birds of the air.
And I felt all those things, finally knowing them all to be true and sure that the bird hadn't stumbled on its own accord but by the very hand of God. May the Lord's careful awareness and devotion to us always and forever move us to praise, and may he continue to send wee little birds crashing into our days to remind us whenever necessary.
