Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. 1 Peter 3:4
How affirming! My inward person, which only God could ever fully know has the potential for imperishable beauty, namely meekness and peacefulness, that God himself delights in. It's incorruptible, it's humble and it's treasured by God - much unlike external beauty, which is here today and gone tomorrow and says nothing of the heart. It's hard to argue with a verse like that.
Except that the verse before this says "Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear" (1 Peter 3:3).
Which might raise eyebrows when it's coming from a jewelry company. But we couldn't agree with this verse more. One commentary on the passage says, "Peter did not forbid all adornment. But for the godly woman, outward adornment is always in moderation, and her emphasis is always on inward adornment."
We're with Peter. Let's spend infinitely more time, thought and effort on the beauty of the heart - a beauty that far exceeds the world's expectations and long outlasts it's lifetime.
AND YOU WILL KNOW THE TRUTH, AND THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE. JOHN 8:32
